SOLO DRILL 1: SHADOW SWING IN PICKLEBALL

Shadow swing is a great solo drill to improve your form in pickleball. Most often, players do not know the right procedure to swing the pickleball paddle and hit the ball. Remember, this is the shadow swing for practicing pickleball alone, so, we will not use any ball.

This is a solo drill that can be called pickleball without a net because it does not require the net or even a ball, it only requires a paddle.

HOW TO PERFORM SHADOW SWING

Just stand still holding the paddle in your hand. Now, practice the swing by moving the paddle assuming you are hitting the ball.

Try to keep the racket still and the swing smooth. This will significantly help your posture for pickleball.

TIPS FOR SHADOW SWING IN PICKLEBALL

Shadow swing solo drill can be a little hard as it is a technical process but I have some tips for you:

USE A MIRROR:

By using a mirror, you will be able to track your posture and determine whether you are standing upright or not. It can be a good way to improve your body posture.

FOCUS ON FOOTWORK:

Pickleball is a sport involving mental and physical actions. Your feet need to be in the right direction for hitting the ball. For solo drills, try to move your feet in correspondence with the swing of the paddle.

Be patient. Becoming good at swinging takes time, don’t lose courage and try better on every attempt.

SOLO DRILL 2: STATIC DROP FEEDS IN PICKLEBALL

Static drop feeds involve dropping the ball in front of your feet, letting it bounce once, and hitting it center with your paddle.

A static drop feed is best for improving time and accuracy. This solo drill will give you confidence that you can hit any incoming ball.

HOW TO PERFORM STATIC DROP FEED

Static Drop Feed is a simple technique and you may have done it in your teenage. Here are some steps on how to perform static Drop Feed:

STEP 1: Drop the ball in front of your feet.

STEP 2: Wait till the ball bounce once on the ground.

STEP 3: After the bounce, when the ball comes upwards, hit it with your paddle.

STEP 4: Repeat this same procedure until you are satisfied with your form.

TIPS FOR STATIC DROP FEED

  • You should always try to hit the ball with the center of your pickleball paddle.
  • Do not focus on hitting the ball to make it travel farther.
  • Try to focus on both techniques, Shadow Swing, and static Drop Feed at the same time.

You can perform this solo pickleball drill at home but try not to hit too hard as it may cause damage.

SOLO DRILL 3: DYNAMIC DROP FEEDS IN PICKLEBALL

Dynamic Drop Feeds are more challenging than Static Drop Feeds but if you have learned Static Drop Feeds then it will be much easier for you.

It is a great solo drill to perform when you are practicing pickleball alone. They improve your timing, movement, and hand-eye coordination.

DYNAMIC DROP FEEDS IN COURT

If you are present in a pickleball court then try to use a pickleball throwing machine. The machine will throw balls to you at different heights and speeds and you have to play it.

This forces you to change your position and swing the paddle with each incoming ball which will truly enhance your movement and timing.

DYNAMIC DROP FEEDS AT HOME

If you want to practice pickleball alone at home then you will need a pickleball practice wall. Now, what is a pickleball hitting wall or a pickleball practice wall?

It is a wall that is used for throwing the ball onto it and then hitting the returning ball.

HOW TO MAKE A PICKLEBALL PRACTICE WALL

You do not have to build a new wall, just identify a wall in your home or area on which you can throw the pickleball.

You should consider a wall that does not have any windows because the ball may hit them and then you will have to pay for the window. This wall may be in your home, the boundary wall, or any other wall but try not to disturb the neighbors.

HOW TO PERFORM DYNAMIC DROP FEEDS AT HOME

STEP 1: Assuming that you have found a wall, stand at some distance from it with a ball and Pickleball paddle in your hand.

STEP 2: Throw the ball towards the wall with such force that it should return towards you.

STEP 3: Let the returning ball bounce once.

STEP 4: Make your movement and hit the ball again towards the wall.

STEP 5: Start hitting the ball toward the wall like you are actually playing pickleball. Consider the wall as your opponent.

STEP 6: When you are no longer able to keep the momentum of hitting the ball, pick it up with your hand and repeat these steps.

With each throw, the ball will return at different speeds in different directions which will force you to move and change your swing.

Despite the fact that it’s not the best method, still, it’s a good way to practice pickleball alone at home.

SOLO DRILL 4: VOLLEY IN PICKLEBALL

Most of you will be familiar with pickleball volley but if not then Volleying involves hitting the pickleball into the air rather than letting it bounce on the court.

Volleys are the key shots in pickleball. It is a technique of keeping the ball in motion and attacking your opponent.

HOW TO PERFORM A VOLLEY IN PICKLEBALL

Here are some steps which will help you in performing an effective volley in pickleball.

RIGHT STANCE

To play a volley, you have to be in the right stance which can be easily attained by practicing the first solo pickleball drill. Knees should be bent and feet should be shoulder-width apart. With the handle pointing down, your paddle should be in front of you.

HITTING THE PICKLEBALL

The ideal contact between your paddle and the ball is the center of your paddle.

FOLLOW THROUGH WITH SHOT

It is a great technique to keep you and the ball in momentum. You should swing with the motion of the ball to provide greater motion.

HOW TO PERFORM VOLLEY ALONE

If you do not have a partner then stand at the NVZ and volley the back and forth with yourself. Try to keep the ball in the court and exercise the hitting power.

SOLO DRILL 5: TOPSPIN PICKLEBALL

This solo drill is an excellent way to practice pickleball alone at home or in any other area.

A Topspin Drive is used to get the pickleball to dip low after clearing the net quickly. It makes it difficult for the opponent to continue the rally by hitting the ball with a lower velocity.

Practicing Topspin Drive will help you learn how to dip the ball so it lands low to the net while staying in the proper spot for service.

HOW TO PERFORM TOPSPIN DRIVE IN PICKLEBALL

If you are practicing topspin pickleball then these are the steps to perform it in the correct way:

STEP 1: Drop the pickleball in front of your feet

STEP 2: Let the ball bounce once

STEP 3: Now, hit the ball with a loose wrist, retaining your position.

STEP 4: Use such force that the ball passes over the net but stays low to the ground.

STEP 5: Repeat the same topspin technique to master it.

Topspin Pickleball gives you an advantage of scoring a point such that the ball lands on the ground directly after passing the net.
